Lewis Hamilton Claims Dramatic Victory at Australian Grand Prix After Late-Race Chaos
The Mercedes driver capitalizes on a late safety car period to secure his first win of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Melbourne.

Lewis Hamilton delivered a masterful drive Wednesday at Albert Park Circuit, claiming his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season in a chaotic Australian Grand Prix that featured multiple lead changes and dramatic late-race incidents. The seven-time world champion started from fifth position but used superior strategy and racecraft to navigate through the field and cross the finish line ahead of championship leader Charles Leclerc and Red Bull's Sergio Perez.

The 41-year-old British driver found himself in the perfect position when a late safety car was deployed with eight laps remaining following a collision between the two Alpine cars. While leaders Max Verstappen and Leclerc had already committed to their final pit strategies, Hamilton's Mercedes team made the bold decision to bring him in for fresh soft tires, a gamble that paid dividends in the closing stages.

Hamilton made his move on the restart with six laps to go, overtaking both Verstappen and Leclerc in a brilliant display of wheel-to-wheel racing that had the Melbourne crowd on their feet. The veteran driver then managed his tires perfectly over the final laps, building a comfortable margin while the field behind him battled for the remaining podium positions.

"This feels incredible, especially after the difficult start we've had to the season," Hamilton said during the podium celebration. "The team made a brilliant strategic call with the safety car, and the car felt absolutely fantastic on those soft tires. To win here in Melbourne, where the fans are so passionate, is always special. This gives us tremendous momentum heading into the next phase of the championship."

The victory was Hamilton's 105th career win and moved him up to fourth in the drivers' championship standings, just 28 points behind leader Leclerc. The result also provided Mercedes with their first win of the season and demonstrated that the Brackley-based team may finally have a car capable of challenging Red Bull and Ferrari for race victories.

Verstappen, who had dominated the first two-thirds of the race from pole position, was forced to settle for fourth place after his medium tires faded dramatically in the closing stages. The reigning world champion expressed frustration with Red Bull's strategy but acknowledged that Hamilton had driven a near-perfect race to capitalize on the circumstances. The result sets up an intriguing battle heading into the next round in Japan, where all three teams will be eager to establish their credentials as championship contenders.
