Exeter await scan on Immanuel Feyi-Waboso hamstring injury
Exeter Chiefs are awaiting a scan to establish the extent of a hamstring injury suffered by England winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso during their 34-28 victory over Newcastle at Sandy Park. According to BBC Sport, the 23-year-old left the field 15 minutes into the second half of Exeter’s first league win of the season.
Watch the highlights:
Director of rugby Rob Baxter told the BBC his initial impression was that Feyi-Waboso had overloaded the muscle rather than suffered a major tear. He said the winger continued after first reporting discomfort, completed another kick chase and recovered the ball at full speed, but still felt something was wrong. Baxter expected a scan followed by an assessment early in the week; his comments were not a confirmed diagnosis.
The injury interrupted a run of regular involvement for Feyi-Waboso at the beginning of the campaign. He has started each of Exeter’s three Premiership matches this season and scored twice against Bath the previous week. The Newcastle match therefore ended with the Chiefs recording their first victory but also awaiting further information about a player who has featured throughout their league start.
Feyi-Waboso has also been a regular starter for England, playing from the outset in all three of their summer Nations Championship fixtures and scoring against Fiji and Argentina. England are due to host Australia, Japan and New Zealand in November in the competition’s second half. The BBC report did not establish whether this latest injury would affect his availability for those games.
The winger has already had significant injury absences. A hamstring problem sustained in January kept him out of this year’s Six Nations, while a shoulder injury sidelined him for the second half of the 2024-25 season. Baxter nevertheless presented the latest issue as a concern rather than an expected long-term absence, pending medical assessment.
Exeter secured the Newcastle result through Henry Slade’s 64th-minute penalty and a late Bachuki Tchumbadze try, despite Christian Wade scoring a hat-trick for the visitors. The bonus-point victory left the Chiefs eighth, four points behind leaders Gloucester, according to the BBC’s match report.
