Everton-Wolves Carabao Cup Tie Moved After Liverpool Fixture Clash

Everton's Carabao Cup third-round match against Wolves has been rescheduled at short notice because of a conflict with Liverpool's Champions League calendar. BBC Sport reported that the game, originally set for Wednesday, September 9, will now be played seven days later on Wednesday, September 16.

The September 9 slot had initially been selected to keep Everton's home match separate from Liverpool's home cup tie against Tottenham. Liverpool-Tottenham had been scheduled for September 16 after being chosen for television coverage. The earlier date also accounted for the different domestic schedules of Premier League Everton and Championship club Wolves.

That arrangement changed when UEFA released its Champions League schedule and placed Liverpool's opening league-phase match against Atletico Madrid at Anfield on September 9. Merseyside Police does not allow Everton and Liverpool to stage home games on the same night, making the original Everton-Wolves date unworkable.

According to BBC Sport, the English Football League asked UEFA to change Liverpool's European fixture, but the request was rejected because European competition dates take priority. The resulting solution moves Everton-Wolves to September 16 and brings Liverpool's Carabao Cup game against Tottenham forward by one day, to Tuesday, September 15.

The alterations extend beyond the two Merseyside clubs. Wolves had Championship fixtures scheduled for September 13 and September 20, creating a collision with the rearranged cup tie. Their league match against Portsmouth will consequently be moved out of September and played on October 20, after the first international break.

The EFL apologized for the late changes and said it had no viable alternative once the Champions League date was confirmed, while expressing frustration that UEFA did not accommodate its request. The episode reflects the scheduling pressure created by European competitions beginning on different September dates, which has already led the EFL to use a pre-draw process designed to prevent additional clashes involving participating clubs.
