Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 to reach quarter-finals without Grealish
Everton will visit Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Jack Grealish was omitted for disciplinary reasons.

Everton reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United on Thursday, October 29. BBC Sport reported that David Moyes' side advanced without Jack Grealish, who had been excluded from selection for disciplinary reasons.

Watch the highlights:

James Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Hayden Hackney added his first Everton goal before half-time. Thierno Barry made it 3-0 in the 69th minute after receiving Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's cross. Dan Burn headed a late consolation for Newcastle, whose early chances had brought saves from Jordan Pickford.

Grealish's omission was confirmed, but Everton did not publicly explain the incident behind it. BBC Sport reported that the decision was understood to concern an unauthorised absence from training. That account remained distinct from the club's statement: Moyes declined to provide details after the match and described leaving the winger out as a club decision that he supported.

The manager also declined to say whether Grealish would be available for Everton's Premier League visit to Newcastle on Monday. There was therefore no confirmed return date in his post-match comments. Moyes praised the players who took part in the cup tie for their performance despite the absence and stressed the standards expected of Everton's squad both on and off the pitch.

According to BBC Sport, Grealish is back at Everton on loan from Manchester City after also spending much of last season with the club. He had made five Premier League appearances for Everton this season and played in their previous EFL Cup victory over Wolves. His involvement in that earlier round did not alter the decision to leave him out against Newcastle.

Everton's next cup opponents are League Two side Fleetwood Town, who eliminated Arsenal in the last 16. The result keeps Everton in contention for a competition they have never won; their most recent major trophy remains the FA Cup in 1995. Newcastle's cup campaign is over, with the teams meeting again in league competition on Monday at St James' Park.
