Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 to book Fleetwood cup quarter-final
James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored as Everton reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. David Moyes's side will visit Fleetwood Town in December.

Everton advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United on Thursday, October 29. James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Dan Burn replying late for the visitors. Sky Sports reported that Everton will travel to Fleetwood Town for their last-eight tie in December.

Watch the highlights:

The hosts played without Jack Grealish, whom Everton confirmed was unavailable because of a breach of club discipline. The club's team announcement also detailed two changes from the side that had started against Arsenal: Hackney and Tyler Dibling replaced Harrison Armstrong and Brennan Johnson. Tyrique George started on the opposite flank, with Barry leading the attack.

Newcastle threatened before falling behind. According to the visitors' official match report, Jordan Pickford saved Harvey Barnes' header after Nico Gonzalez found the winger with a crossfield pass. At the other end, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had an early effort deflected wide. Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle had made one starting change, selecting Jacob Ramsey in place of Joelinton.

Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute. Sky Sports described George putting Amar Dedic under pressure near the sideline before Hackney supplied Garner for the finish. Hackney then scored his first Everton goal just before the interval, meeting Barry's delivery to give the home side a two-goal advantage at half-time.

Jaissle responded by introducing Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and Joelinton for the second half. Newcastle's account recorded an opportunity for Wissa from Joe Willock's chipped pass, but the forward could not send his header over Pickford. Dedic also saw a long-range attempt deflected over the bar as Newcastle tried to reduce the deficit.

Barry extended Everton's lead in the 69th minute, finishing from Dewsbury-Hall's pass after Garner had helped launch the attack. Burn eventually headed Newcastle onto the scoresheet, but his late goal could not change the outcome. The result ended Newcastle's cup run and confirmed Everton's December trip to Fleetwood, who had eliminated Arsenal earlier in the week, according to Sky Sports.
