Everton forward Martin Sherif fined £5,000 over 61 football bets
Everton forward Martin Sherif has been fined £5,000 after admitting breaches of the Football Association's betting rules involving 61 wagers on football matches. BBC Sport reported the sanction on Thursday, while a Mirror report carried by AOL said the regulatory commission decided against imposing a sporting suspension on the 20-year-old.

The case covered bets made between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. In the statement reported by the BBC, the FA said Sherif admitted a breach of Rule E1.2 through causing, permitting or enabling those bets. That wording is important: the admission concerned his role in allowing the betting, rather than establishing that he personally placed every wager.
According to the Mirror's account of the proceedings, six gambling accounts were registered in Sherif's name and financed by him. He told the commission he had not made the bets himself. The report put the total amount staked at £1,974.77, with returns of £1,539.02, leaving an overall loss of £435.75 across the accounts.
The commission nevertheless questioned his account of what he knew. The Mirror reported that it found his claim of being unaware of the football bets difficult to accept, noting that he had attended gambling education sessions and knew betting was prohibited. Sherif emphasised his youth and inexperience, apologised and said he had warned Everton academy team-mates about gambling risks.
JOE, citing the Liverpool Echo's account of the hearing, reported that his early admission, age at the time of the bets and genuine remorse were considered when determining the punishment. The commission concluded that his conduct did not justify a sporting sanction. The outcome therefore brings a financial penalty without a playing ban arising from this disciplinary case.
Born in Liberia, Sherif joined Everton's youth system in 2019 and began training with the senior squad in early 2025, according to the BBC. He moved to Port Vale on loan in February for the remainder of the season. The BBC said he scored twice in 17 League One appearances during that spell, which ended with Vale being relegated.
