Everton debutant Maitland-Niles snatches 2-2 draw against Manchester United

Ainsley Maitland-Niles marked his Everton debut with a 96th-minute equaliser as David Moyes's side twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 Premier League draw against Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Guardian reported that the deadline-week signing struck from 25 yards with virtually the final kick, preserving Everton's unbeaten start to the season.

Manchester United produced the clearer openings in a subdued first half. Bruno Fernandes hit the crossbar with a cushioned volley after Bryan Mbeumo's knock-down, while Matheus Cunha sent another opportunity over the goal. Everton's best chance before the interval came when Thierno Barry headed Merlin Röhl's cross over from close range.

The visitors broke through only 62 seconds after the restart. Kobbie Mainoo found Mbeumo on the right, and the forward drove between challenges from Tyrique George and Vitalii Mykolenko before finishing beyond Jordan Pickford. James Tarkowski then made a timely intervention to prevent Cunha from converting after Marcus Rashford's back-heel.

Everton improved as the second half developed and drew level with seven minutes of normal time remaining. Substitute Hayden Hackney found George in space on the right, and George scored from a tight angle with a shot into the near top corner. The goal followed missed chances for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Harrison Armstrong and Brennan Johnson.

United reclaimed the lead in the 88th minute through Benjamin Sesko. The striker helped start the move before Fernandes released Luke Shaw down the left. Shaw delivered a cross beyond Tarkowski, and Sesko headed past Pickford, with the ball crossing the line despite the Everton goalkeeper getting a hand to it.

That advantage did not survive stoppage time. Maitland-Niles, introduced 19 minutes before his decisive moment, found the top corner of Senne Lammens' goal to complete Everton's second recovery of the afternoon. The former Arsenal player had joined Everton on Monday in a deal The Guardian valued at £4.3 million, and his immediate impact turned an apparent defeat into a point.
