European rugby honours Foley and Andrews as Munster beat Racing 92
Munster defeated Racing 92 33-25 in Cork on Saturday, opening their Champions Cup campaign with a victory on a night of remembrance for Anthony Foley. BBC Sport reported that Craig Casey scored the decisive late try at Pairc Ui Chaoimh after the visitors threatened to overturn Munster's lead.
Watch the highlights:
Brian Gleeson and Shay McCarthy scored before half-time, and Tadhg Beirne's try extended the advantage after the interval. Racing responded through Wilfried Hulleu, Maxime Machenaud and Joey Manu, while Fineen Wycherley also crossed for Munster. Arthur Roche was sent to the sin-bin before Casey's finish settled the contest with two minutes remaining.
Foley's family attended the match, played ten years and one day after his death. Both teams left the number eight jersey unused. The Shannon RFC choir performed before kick-off, and applause followed in the eighth minute to honour the former Munster captain, who had led the province to European success.
Elsewhere, European rugby paid tribute to Hyron Andrews, the South African lock who died aged 31 at the Lions' team hotel on Friday. In a separate report, BBC Sport said the Lions chose to play their Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle in his honour. The French side won 31-14.
La Rochelle supporters applauded the Lions as they entered the field. Both teams wore black armbands, and Andrews' number five shirt was placed on the pitch for the pre-match silence. La Rochelle players Dillyn Leyds, David Kriel and Salmaan Moerat presented the Lions with a commemorative jersey. Some players were visibly in tears during the tribute.
Andrews' former club Sale also remembered him before facing Glasgow Warriors. He had spent more than two years at Sale before returning to South Africa after last season. Following Sale's 47-27 defeat, director of rugby Alex Sanderson told BBC Radio 5 Live that players were supporting one another and remained in contact with Andrews' family. He described the close friendships Andrews had formed at the club and said Sale would help his family.
