Europe and USA tied at 4-4 after Solheim Cup opening day

Europe and the United States finished Friday level at 4-4 at Bernardus Golf, The Guardian reported, after an American afternoon fightback.

Carlota Ciganda and Julia Lopez Ramirez halved their match against Nelly Korda and Lauren Coughlin, with Ciganda holing the final putt, according to AS. Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud beat Allisen Corpuz and Auston Kim 2&1. Megan Khang and Alison Lee won 5&3, while Charley Hull and Lottie Woad shared their match with Yealimi Noh and Angel Yin.

The morning had produced a record for Korda and Corpuz, who beat Hull and Woad 4&3. Golf Channel reported that they became the first Solheim Cup partnership to reach five wins without defeat. They lost the first hole but won three consecutive holes from the sixth to the eighth, eventually completing a bogey-free performance to secure the first point of the competition.

Coughlin and Alison Lee added another American point by defeating Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Celine Boutier 3&2. Coughlin holed an eagle putt on the 10th as the pair built their advantage. Her career record improved to four wins and a half from five matches, equalling Michelle Wie's American record for points earned over a player's first five Solheim Cup appearances, Golf Channel reported.

Europe's foursomes points came from Esther Henseleit and Leona Maguire, who defeated Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan by two holes, and Maja Stark and Linn Grant, who beat Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho 3&2. Those victories left the opening session tied at 2-2. Golf Channel noted that it was only the third evenly divided opening session in the competition's 20 editions.

The published competition schedule has another four foursomes matches and four fourballs on Saturday, followed by 12 singles on Sunday. Foursomes partners share a ball and alternate shots; in fourballs each player uses her own ball, with the better score counting for the pair. Every match awards one point for a win or half a point to each side for a tie.
