Europe reclaim Solheim Cup as Hull, Woad and Ciganda deliver in singles

Europe reclaimed the Solheim Cup with a 15-13 victory over the United States at Bernardus Golf Club in the Netherlands on Sunday. BBC Sport reported that Charley Hull, Lottie Woad and Carlota Ciganda helped decide the contest in the singles, after the teams had entered the final day tied at 8-8.

Hull supplied an early point by beating Megan Khang 3&2 in the opening match. The result followed two days in which Hull and fellow Englishwoman Woad had collected only half a point from their partnership. Captain Anna Nordqvist kept Hull at the front of the singles order, and the Englishwoman rewarded that decision with a win that put Europe ahead.

Woad then defeated fellow Solheim Cup newcomer Auston Kim, while Ciganda was closing in on victory against Jennifer Kupcho. Together, those positions ensured Europe would reach the 14½ points needed to regain the trophy. Ciganda's success also reversed her fortunes against Kupcho from Saturday's fourballs, when the American had holed long putts on the final two holes to take the point.

Europe also received singles victories from two more debutants. Spain's Julia Lopez Ramirez beat Yealimi Noh 3&2, and France's Nastasia Nadaud defeated Andrea Lee by the same margin. Nadaud had already partnered Mimi Rhodes to two victories earlier in the competition. Rhodes, another member of Europe's four-player rookie contingent, lost her singles match to world number one Nelly Korda.

The Americans produced resistance elsewhere. Lauren Coughlin beat Leona Maguire, ending the European's unbeaten singles record, and Lindy Duncan defeated Maja Stark. Alison Lee recovered from four holes down against Esther Henseleit to win by one hole. BBC Sport described Lee's turnaround as the largest singles comeback in the competition's history, although it could not prevent an overall American defeat.

Nordqvist explained that Hull and Woad had ranked among the week's leading birdie-makers despite their limited return in the paired matches. United States captain Angela Stanford credited Europe's performance in the singles. The outcome left the Americans still seeking their first Solheim Cup victory on European soil since 2015, with Nordqvist's team converting an even contest after four sessions into a trophy-winning final day.
