George Bell has joined Essex permanently after scoring three half-centuries during his loan spell. The wicketkeeper-batter has signed a two-year contract.

Essex have signed wicketkeeper-batter George Bell from Lancashire on a two-year contract after his loan spell at the end of the 2026 season. The 24-year-old is returning on a permanent basis following three appearances in which he passed fifty every time, BBC Sport reported. The agreement keeps him at Essex for the next two seasons.

Bell said he saw Essex as a place where he could continue developing while helping the team pursue victories and trophies. The move follows the opportunity he had to work with the squad late last season, rather than an introduction to an entirely new playing environment. His three half-centuries provided an immediate batting return during that initial spell.

The club's announcement detailed scores of 64 not out against Yorkshire on his Essex debut, an unbeaten 61 against Warwickshire and 66 against Glamorgan. His first two appearances came at home. Essex also named Bell their Men's September Player of the Month, recognition that director of cricket Chris Silverwood said reflected the impact he made after joining the group.

Silverwood's assessment extended beyond those innings. According to BBC Sport, he praised Bell's approach to training and work, his attitude and the way he conducted himself around the squad. The director of cricket said the performances and personal impression together had convinced Essex that Bell had earned a permanent opportunity, with the club pleased to secure his addition.

Bell made his first-class debut for Lancashire in 2022. Essex's announcement put his first-class record at more than 1,400 runs from 37 matches, with nine half-centuries and a highest score of 99. In List A cricket, he has scored nearly 700 runs in 24 appearances, including a century, and has also played nine T20 matches.

Chelmsford already features prominently in Bell's career: it hosted his first-class debut, a century for England Under-19s against Sri Lanka and his first Essex appearance. The club confirmed that he will wear number 17. Bell said the welcome from players and coaches, alongside the mix of emerging talent and experienced teammates, had encouraged him ahead of the 2027 season.
