Essex batter Robin Das charged with two counts of rape

Essex cricketer Robin Das has been charged with two counts of rape and is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, 9 October, BBC Sport reported on Wednesday. The 24-year-old top-order batter was charged on 23 July, according to a Metropolitan Police statement cited in the report.

Police said the charges followed Das's arrest on 27 August 2025 after reports that a woman had been raped in Brixton on 30 March 2024. The force said specialist officers continued to support the woman. The charges concern allegations; they are not findings of guilt. The BBC report did not state a plea.

Essex confirmed that a contracted member of their playing staff had appeared in court over an incident outside club activities. In its statement, the county described a suspension that was immediate and remains ongoing. The club also said it would continue to follow the appropriate legal processes and guidance as the matter proceeds.

The county said it had maintained contact with the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Professional Cricketers' Association, the Cricket Regulator and the player throughout. Essex also pointed to its safeguarding and human-resources procedures, saying employees were expected to meet high standards of professional conduct. It declined to comment further because legal proceedings are under way.

According to BBC Sport, Das has played 60 matches for Essex since making his debut for the county in 2020. His most recent appearance was a One-Day Cup fixture against Middlesex on 21 July, which the report identified as his only senior outing of the 2026 season. That match preceded the charging date given by police.

His career record includes nine first-class appearances for Essex, as well as 29 matches in 50-over cricket and 24 in the T20 format. Two of those T20 appearances came with Dhaka Dominators in the Bangladesh Premier League. The next court appearance identified in the report is the October hearing, while Essex's statement says the playing-staff suspension continues.
