Ervine and Taylor lead Zimbabwe recovery in 99-run win over Bangladesh
Zimbabwe recovered from an early batting collapse to beat Bangladesh by 99 runs in their one-day international at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, October 17. Craig Ervine scored 93 and Brendan Taylor contributed 81 before Brad Evans took four wickets. BBC Sport's scorecard records Zimbabwe making 271-8 from 50 overs and dismissing Bangladesh for 172 in 33.4 overs.
Watch the highlights:
The recovery was necessary after Zimbabwe chose to bat and Taskin Ahmed removed their first three batters. Brian Bennett fell without scoring, Ben Curran made six and Tafadzwa Tsiga added 16, leaving Zimbabwe 24-3 after seven overs. Taskin finished with 3-44 from his 10 overs, including two maidens, but Bangladesh could not turn that opening spell into a low target.
Taylor and Ervine added 150 for the fourth wicket, taking the total to 174 before Taylor was caught off Saif Hassan. Taylor's 101-ball innings contained 10 fours, while Ervine struck nine fours in 106 deliveries before falling to Shoriful Islam. Their stand supplied the bulk of Zimbabwe's total and gave the lower order a platform after the three early dismissals.
Zimbabwe still needed contributions at the finish. They were 234-8 when Evans was dismissed, but Newman Nyamhuri and Wellington Masakadza both ended unbeaten on 21 to carry the innings through its full allocation. Their unbroken ninth-wicket stand added 37. Shoriful returned 2-47, while Saif took 2-17 from three overs, dismissing both Taylor and Sikandar Raza.
Bangladesh reached 47 before losing their first wicket, with Tanzid Hasan Tamim eventually top-scoring with 46 from 38 balls. However, his dismissal at 66 was followed by Najmul Hossain Shanto's at 68, and the chase continued to lose wickets. Saif scored 26 and Rishad Hossain made 23, but neither could build the kind of substantial innings Zimbabwe had received from Taylor and Ervine.
Evans finished with 4-45 from 6.4 overs, removing Shanto, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Shoriful and Mustafizur Rahman. Masakadza supported him with 2-18 from six overs and Raza took 2-28 from seven. Blessing Muzarabani conceded only 23 runs in eight overs while taking one wicket. Evans completed the result by catching Mustafizur off his own bowling, ending Bangladesh's innings with more than 16 overs unused.
