Erin Cuthbert returns as Scotland take World Cup play-off lead in Czechia
Erin Cuthbert returned to competitive action as Scotland won 2-0 away to Czechia in the first leg of their Women's World Cup qualifying play-off on Friday. Caroline Weir and Claire Emslie scored in Pardubice, giving Scotland an advantage to defend when the teams meet again in Paisley on Tuesday.
BBC Sport reported that the appearance was Cuthbert's first of the season after a knee injury. The 28-year-old Chelsea captain has yet to play for her club this campaign. Speaking to BBC Scotland after coming off the bench, she described the relief of getting back on the pitch following a difficult summer of rehabilitation.
Cuthbert said she had spent much of a month using crutches and wearing a brace, losing muscle that she then worked to rebuild over the summer. She also described doubts about whether she could regain her previous level and how her knee would respond to playing again. Her return followed a recovery she characterised as both physically and mentally demanding, rather than a straightforward wait to resume football.
The Scottish FA's match report recorded a goalless first half before Weir broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Rachel McLauchlan delivered the ball into the area and Kathleen McGovern headed it back for the captain to finish. Scotland then introduced Cuthbert and Emslie in the 63rd minute, replacing Kirsty MacLean and McGovern as Melissa Andreatta changed her midfield and attack.
Emslie quickly added the second goal after Lauren Davidson won possession and advanced down the right before finding her. At the other end, goalkeeper Sandy MacIver denied substitute Franny Cerna and then held a header from Andrea Staskova, helping Scotland retain their two-goal margin. Czechia finished with 10 players after Tereza Krejcirikova was dismissed following a video review of her challenge on Jenna Clark.
Scotland have not yet secured progression, with the home leg still to come. The Scottish FA said the winners of the tie will face either Lithuania or Sweden in the next qualifying round. BBC Sport described Sweden as the likely opponent, but that matchup remains unconfirmed.
