Erin Cuthbert returns from knee injury as Scotland beat Czech Republic 2-0
Erin Cuthbert made her return from a knee injury in Scotland's 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic, coming off the bench for her first appearance of the season. BBC Scotland reported that the Chelsea captain welcomed the chance to play again after a difficult summer of rehabilitation, having not yet featured for her club this season.
Watch the highlights:
The 28-year-old described a recovery that involved spending much of a month using crutches and wearing a brace. She said she had lost muscle and worked over the summer to rebuild it. Speaking to BBC Scotland, Cuthbert explained that concerns about her knee, her performance and whether she could regain her previous level had accompanied the physical work.
Scotland's breakthrough in Friday's first leg came after a goalless opening half. According to the BBC's match report, Caroline Weir scored in the 57th minute, bringing down Kathleen McGovern's knockdown with her thigh before shooting into the far bottom corner. The goal put Melissa Andreatta's side ahead in the opening round of Women's World Cup qualifying play-offs.
Claire Emslie doubled the lead in the 65th minute, only two minutes after coming on, with Lauren Davidson supplying the pass. Cuthbert also entered in the 63rd minute. Emslie's finish was her first goal since becoming a mother, and her son and mother were in the crowd. Cuthbert expressed admiration for her team-mate's return to international football alongside motherhood.
The hosts threatened to respond, but Sandy MacIver made a series of saves and Franny Cerna headed a close-range chance wide. The Czech Republic finished with 10 players following an 87th-minute dismissal for a late challenge on Jenna Clark. Scotland also had a stoppage-time penalty award overturned after a video review showed goalkeeper Barbora Votikova had touched the ball.
Scotland take their advantage into Tuesday's return in Paisley, with Sweden the likely next opponent rather than a confirmed one. Cuthbert welcomed the victory but warned against treating a two-goal lead as secure. Her return and Emslie's scoring contribution gave Scotland two further positives alongside the away win, with the tie still to be completed.
