England target Pakistan whitewash as Trescothick backs settled Test side

England will pursue a 3-0 Test series sweep against Pakistan, with interim head coach Marcus Trescothick indicating that he would prefer to keep a settled side for the final match at Edgbaston. England secured the series on Sunday by winning the second Test at Lord's, giving Trescothick two victories from his first two matches in charge.

The Guardian reported that Trescothick intends to maintain England's intensity despite the series already being decided. His stated priority is to complete the sweep, and he said the best route would be to field the most consistent team available. Any selection changes are expected to depend first on how the players recover from the Lord's Test.

The schedule gives England time to assess the squad. The second Test ended on day four, leaving nine clear days before play begins at Edgbaston. Players are also due a break of four or five days after a busy period, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate fatigue before settling on the final XI.

Conditions could still prompt a change. Trescothick said the team selected at Lord's was chosen for that surface, while the squad provides options for different pitches. He expects Edgbaston to offer a different challenge and recalled that England's match against India there last summer produced 1,014 runs for the visitors, their highest aggregate in a Test.

England's seam unit of Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson has impressed across the first two Tests. Trescothick believes regular matches together will make the group more effective, particularly in difficult conditions away from home. He also highlighted the pace available in the attack, with three bowlers capable of operating at around 92mph, and noted that all four frontline seamers are currently match-fit.
