England moved into a commanding position in the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s, ending the second day on 81-3 in their second innings and 261 runs ahead. BBC Sport reported that the hosts had earlier dismissed Pakistan for 110 after extending their own first innings to 290.

Ollie Robinson led the attack with figures of 4-11, while Jofra Archer took 3-26. Josh Tongue also claimed two wickets, and Gus Atkinson completed a four-man seam unit that repeatedly troubled Pakistan. Azan Awais made 46, but no other Pakistan batter reached 20 as the tourists surrendered a first-innings deficit of 180.

England began the morning on 248-9, with Atkinson and Tongue adding 42 runs before the innings ended. Their final-wicket partnership reached 47 and pushed the total to 290. Pakistan then had to bat without opener Imam-ul-Haq, who was unavailable after suffering a calf injury.

Robinson’s accuracy and movement proved decisive, with wicketkeeper Jamie Smith often standing up to the stumps. Archer supplied the pace, reaching 95mph during his opening spell before later bowling Ali Usman and Muhammad Abbas. Robinson removed Saud Shakeel and Muhammad Rizwan following successful lbw reviews, then dismissed Awais with a short delivery.

Pakistan struck back early when England batted again. Khurram Shahzad removed Ben Duckett and Jordan Cox inside the first 19 balls, leaving the hosts 13-2. Emilio Gay and captain Joe Root then shared a 47-run partnership before Mohammad Ali trapped Root lbw for 24. Harry Brook survived an lbw decision on review after an inside edge was detected.

Gay reached the close unbeaten on 30 as deteriorating light made batting increasingly difficult. England still have substantial time to press for victory despite a poor weather forecast for Saturday. Pakistan’s highest total in three innings on the tour is 171, according to BBC Sport, leaving the visitors facing a major task to prevent England from clinching the series.
