England Rout Wales 8-2 to Top Hockey World Cup Pool D
England secured first place in Pool D at the Hockey World Cup with an 8-2 victory over Wales. Sam Ward opened the scoring after 73 seconds before seven more England goals completed a dominant display.

England sealed top spot in Pool D at the Hockey World Cup with an 8-2 victory over Wales on Wednesday. BBC Sport reported that the third-ranked English side had already guaranteed a place in the second round after two matches, but maintained its momentum with a commanding attacking performance.

Watch the highlights:

Sam Ward put England ahead after only 73 seconds, and Will Calnan soon redirected the ball into the net for the second. Wales goalkeeper Toby Reynolds-Cotterill produced several strong saves to limit the damage, but Calnan struck again before Tom Sorsby drove in England’s fourth goal to close the first half.

Wales improved during the third quarter, yet England captain Zach Wallace scored from a rebound to make it 5-0. Sam Hooper added another goal through the legs of Reynolds-Cotterill in the fourth quarter, while Henry Croft and Nick Bandurak also found the net as England extended its lead to eight.

Gareth Furlong provided Wales’ response with two late goals, converting a penalty stroke and then the team’s only penalty corner. His second took his tournament total to four and moved him to the top of the World Cup scoring chart, according to BBC Sport. The two goals also matched Wales’ highest total in a single game against England.

England’s pressure was reflected in a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners. The result was the teams’ second meeting at a Hockey World Cup, following England’s 5-0 win at the 2023 tournament in India. Wales entered Wednesday ranked 15th in the world, with only Japan ranked lower among teams at this competition.

The tournament has replaced quarter-finals with a second pool stage. England will carry over its result against the Pool D runner-up and then face host nation the Netherlands plus either Argentina or New Zealand in matches on Saturday and Monday. Wales will move into the ninth-to-16th-place classification phase, facing Japan and either Argentina or New Zealand in Amsterdam before its final match on August 28.
