England Netball Coach Jess Thirlby Resigns Citing Family Priorities Four Months Before Commonwealth Games
Jess Thirlby has stunned the netball world by resigning as England head coach with immediate effect, citing the need to prioritize her family just four months before the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where the Roses will defend their status as leading medal contenders.
The 45-year-old coach, who guided England to their first World Cup final in 2023, made the difficult decision after acknowledging that she had failed to properly process the grief following her fathers death, which occurred during the teams most successful tournament campaign.
This is not a decision I had ever thought I would have to make but I need to turn my attention onto supporting my incredible family, Thirlby explained in an emotional statement that revealed the personal cost of her professional dedication.
Thirlby candidly admitted making a mistake by not prioritizing her emotional needs during a crucial period for both her family and the national team. On reflection, I was mistaken to not prioritise and process the loss of my father at the time of his death, instead, and without regret, travelling with the team for the World Cup and the subsequent series in New Zealand.
The timing of her resignation creates significant disruption for England Netball, coming just as preparations intensify for the Commonwealth Games scheduled from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow. The Roses enter the tournament with high expectations following their World Cup silver medal performance under Thirlbys guidance.
Assistant coach Anna Stembridge will assume immediate responsibility for leading the team into the Commonwealth Games, with England Netball promoting former captain Olivia Murphy to serve as assistant coach. The governing body expressed confidence that this arrangement would provide continuity and leadership during the transition period.
Thirlby inherited the England role in 2019 following Tracey Nevilles departure after the team captured Commonwealth gold in 2018. While she successfully guided the Roses to World Cup glory, her tenure included disappointment at the 2022 Commonwealth Games where England failed to secure a medal.
The outgoing coach acknowledged both achievements and setbacks during her leadership, including recent Test series victories against Jamaica and New Zealand, balanced against a concerning defeat to South Africa in February during their final series preparation before the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games, I am proud of the foundations we have built together, Thirlby reflected. The systems, structures and culture of excellence we have developed have created a strong and resilient team, capable of competing with the best on the international stage.
England Netball chief executive Fran Connolly praised Thirlbys contribution while confirming plans to recruit a permanent replacement after the Commonwealth Games. We are grateful for the leadership and professionalism Jess has shown throughout her time as head coach, and for the significant contribution she has made to the continued growth of the Roses programme.
Thirlbys playing career spanned 15 years from 1991 to 2006, providing her with extensive experience at international level before transitioning into coaching. Her understanding of elite competition pressures made her resignation particularly surprising given her previous ability to balance personal and professional demands.
The World Cup silver medal represented the pinnacle of English netball achievement, with the team reaching the final for the first time in the tournaments history. This success elevated expectations for Commonwealth Games performance, adding pressure to the upcoming tournament.
Stembridge faces the challenging task of maintaining team stability while implementing her own tactical approaches with limited preparation time. Her promotion from assistant coach provides some continuity, though adapting to head coach responsibilities requires significant adjustment.
The next World Cup scheduled for Australia in 2027 provides a clear target for England Netballs long-term planning, with the governing body expecting to complete their permanent coaching appointment well before that tournament begins. The Commonwealth Games will serve as an important indicator of the programs direction under new leadership.
