England Legend Courtney Lawes Eyes International Comeback at Age 37
Former England captain signs one-year deal with Sale Sharks and declares himself available for international selection after retiring from Test rugby.

Rugby union veteran Courtney Lawes has thrown down the gauntlet for an England comeback after confirming his signing with Sale Sharks on a one-year deal, despite being 37 years old and having retired from international rugby following the 2023 World Cup.

The former England captain, who spent the last two seasons playing for Brive in France's second division Pro D2, has officially declared himself available for Test selection once again, setting up a remarkable potential return to the international stage.

"My body feels good and I'm still performing at a high level," Lawes explained. "I feel like I can compete with the best of them, and then some, and if I retired now, I'd probably regret it when I was older."

Sale Sharks director of rugby Alex Sanderson has backed his new signing's ambitions, expressing confidence that Lawes can regain his England place. "I don't think we'd have signed him if he was just a player who wanted a paycheck," Sanderson stated. "He's still got the ability and experience to play some great rugby over the next season, if not the next couple."

Sanderson praised Lawes' continued physical attributes and leadership qualities. "Courtney is robust, dynamic around the park and he hits hard, but he has a fantastic skill set that means he's so much more than just a banger. He wants to bring people with him and lead from the front and I love that."

The signing represents a significant coup for Sale, who are acquiring a player with an extraordinary pedigree. Lawes represented England at four World Cups during his illustrious career and accumulated 105 caps for his country. His domestic achievements are equally impressive, having spent 17 years at Northampton where he claimed two Premiership titles and two Challenge Cup trophies, alongside three Six Nations championships with England.

Lawes' decision to pursue an international comeback reflects his unwillingness to leave anything on the table. "As a rugby player, you've got a very finite career and you're a long time retired so I want to make the most of it while I can," he emphasized. "I'm officially un-retiring from international duty and I'd love to play for England again, but first and foremost I want to play well for Sale and we'll see what happens after that."

The timing of his return to English rugby could hardly be more challenging for Sale, who face a manpower crisis ahead of their Champions Cup quarter-final against Leinster. England squad members Luke Cowan-Dickie and Bevan Rodd have both been ruled out for the remainder of the domestic season, while hooker Nathan Jibulu received a six-week ban for biting.

For Lawes, the Sale move represents more than just a return to English rugby – it's a calculated gamble on extending his international career well into his late thirties. While many players of his age are considering retirement, Lawes is betting that his experience, physicality, and rugby intelligence can still make a difference at the highest level.

Whether England selectors will be tempted by the prospect of recalling such an experienced campaigner remains to be seen, but Lawes has certainly made his intentions clear.
