England name 39 contracted players as Key leaves door open for Carse return
England have named 39 players on their updated contract list, with director of cricket Rob Key saying Brydon Carse could return to international duty depending on the outcome of a Cricket Regulator case. BBC Sport reported that the deals announced on Monday, October 12, cover 30 players on full central contracts and nine on development agreements. Carse remains covered by an existing deal until autumn 2027.
Watch the highlights:
Carse has been charged with breaching England and Wales Cricket Board professional conduct rules following an incident outside a Derby nightclub in August. He was arrested and subsequently de-arrested, and Derbyshire Police took no action over assault allegations. The regulator’s investigation remains ongoing. The 31-year-old is available for England selection but has not been included in a squad since the incident while taking time away from international cricket.
Speaking to the Test Match Special podcast, Key said he could envisage Carse playing for England again, subject to the outcome of the regulatory process. He rejected the suggestion that the absence of a contract extension signalled a decision on the bowler’s international future. Carse had already missed England duty since the Ashes in January because of a wrist injury, having played all five Tests in Australia.
Eleven players received two-year contracts, including Test captain Joe Root and white-ball captain Harry Brook. Uncapped fast bowler Henry Crocombe also secured a two-year agreement, a move the BBC described as unprecedented for an uncapped player. Crocombe joins Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue among the specialist pace bowlers awarded multi-year deals. His inclusion is also his first full central contract.
Emilio Gay, Jordan Cox, Dan Lawrence, Tom Banton, Sam Cook and Matt Fisher are the other first-time recipients of full central contracts. Ollie Robinson returns after two years off the list, following his comeback to the Test side during the home summer. Shoaib Bashir retains his contract as the only specialist red-ball spinner on the full list, while Mason Crane and Liam Patterson-White receive development deals.
England also confirmed changes to their coaching staff. Test head coach Stephen Fleming has added Richard Dawson, James Foster and Eric Simons, with Marcus Trescothick remaining in the red-ball setup. White-ball head coach Brendon McCullum retains Sarah Taylor, Jeetan Patel and Tim Southee. Kevin Pietersen will also work with the white-ball teams ahead of next year’s 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.
