England name 39 contracted players as Key leaves door open for Carse return
England have announced an updated list of 39 contracted players, with uncapped pace bowler Henry Crocombe receiving a two-year deal and Brydon Carse remaining under contract while a disciplinary case continues. BBC Sport reported on Monday that director of cricket Rob Key believes Carse could play for England again, depending on the outcome of the Cricket Regulator proceedings.
Watch the highlights:
Carse was arrested and then de-arrested following an incident outside a Derby nightclub in August. Derbyshire Police subsequently took no action over allegations of assault, but the Cricket Regulator has charged him with breaching England and Wales Cricket Board professional conduct rules. The 31-year-old remains available for selection, although he has not been included in an England squad since the incident while taking time away from international cricket.
The Durham bowler's existing two-year contract runs until autumn 2027. Speaking to the Test Match Special podcast, Key said a return remained possible but would depend on the disciplinary outcome. He also rejected the suggestion that England's decision not to extend Carse's deal revealed a judgement about his international future. Key said the investigation rested with the Regulator and that England would address its outcome afterwards.
Of the 39 players listed, 30 hold full central contracts and nine have development deals. Eleven players, including Test captain Joe Root and white-ball captain Harry Brook, have received two-year contracts running through 30 September 2028. BBC Sport described Crocombe's award as unprecedented for an uncapped player. He joins Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue among specialist fast bowlers given multi-year agreements.
Crocombe, Emilio Gay, Jordan Cox, Dan Lawrence, Tom Banton, Sam Cook and Matt Fisher have received full central contracts for the first time. Ollie Robinson returns to the list after two years without a deal. Shoaib Bashir retains his contract as the only specialist red-ball spinner on the full list, while Mason Crane and Liam Patterson-White have been awarded development contracts.
England also confirmed changes to their coaching teams. Test head coach Stephen Fleming has added Richard Dawson, James Foster and Eric Simons, with Marcus Trescothick remaining in the red-ball setup. White-ball head coach Brendon McCullum retains Sarah Taylor, Jeetan Patel and Tim Southee, while Kevin Pietersen will work with the white-ball teams ahead of next year's 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.
