Emmanuel Iyogun details injury setbacks behind England breakthrough
Northampton prop Emmanuel Iyogun has described the injury and selection setbacks that preceded his England debut in July. In a new interview, he also explained how a positional switch and advice from Ox Nché shaped his development.

Emmanuel Iyogun has described the setbacks that delayed his England debut, revealing how a calf injury on the day of departure ended his hopes of joining the 2025 summer tour. Speaking to the Guardian in an interview published on Friday, the Northampton prop reflected on finally making his first senior international appearance as a replacement against Argentina in July 2026.

Watch the highlights:

The 25-year-old said he had attended the training camps before the 2025 tour, only to be injured when the squad was due to leave. That disappointment followed a brief trip to New Zealand in 2024 as cover for Joe Marler. Iyogun recalled spending four days there and having very limited training time while struggling with jet lag.

His eventual first cap carried particular significance for the family and friends who had supported him through those frustrations. With travelling to Argentina difficult for his family, they gathered at Basildon RFC to watch him play. Iyogun told the Guardian that seeing photographs of their celebrations afterwards brought home the importance of reaching the international stage after so many obstacles.

Iyogun's route into the front row was itself an adjustment. Born in Spain to Nigerian parents, he had played centre at Basildon and was a teenage number eight when Northampton identified him in Essex. Academy head Mark Hopley encouraged him to try prop. His early experience against Leinster at under-18 level was difficult, but Iyogun said Hopley valued his persistence despite his struggles in the scrum.

A Northampton injury crisis accelerated his development in 2020. He featured against Leicester before starting a Champions Cup quarter-final at Exeter the following week, experiences he said helped him improve. He later sought advice directly from South Africa prop Ox Nché, contacting him through Instagram when the Springbok was in London. The pair met for roughly two hours to discuss scrummaging technique and Nché's career.

Iyogun was part of Northampton's title-winning side last season and played in their opening victory over Newcastle Red Bulls last Friday. He told the Guardian he now embraces the demands of scrummaging, having initially been reluctant to change position. He also credited the disappointment of missing the 2025 England tour with strengthening his determination to perform when the following season began.
