Emma Sing Eyes England Starting Role Despite Kildunne Competition
Emma Sing refuses to view her battle for Englands full-back position as a head-to-head rivalry with Ellie Kildunne, instead emphasizing how their contrasting styles make them "almost incomparable" as players.
The 25-year-old Gloucester-Hartpury back has been making waves in the Premiership Womens Rugby, establishing herself as one of the leagues most consistent performers and accurate goal-kickers. Her impressive club form has translated into 13 England caps since her international debut in 2022, including three appearances at the 2025 World Cup triumph.
While Kildunne emerged as the face of England rugby following her electric World Cup performances and runner-up finish in BBC Sports Personality of the Year, Sing brings a different dimension to the number 15 jersey. The Devon native, who grew up on a farm and studied bio-veterinary science at Hartpury University, leverages what she calls her "farm strength" to offer a more physical presence in the back three.
"I understand the media wants to pit us against each other, but we have completely different attributes," Sing explained. "Ellie is incredibly fast with amazing agility and flair. Im more physical, probably 10-plus kilos heavier, and I bring goal-kicking ability that she doesnt necessarily have."
Sings kicking prowess has been instrumental to her success, making her the top points-scorer in the PWR for two consecutive seasons. Even after missing games due to a knee injury last month, she remains the leagues second-highest scorer behind Zoe Harrison, while also claiming four player-of-the-match awards this campaign.
Her return came just in time for Gloucesters crucial 22-17 victory over Saracens in March, showcasing the form that has caught head coach John Mitchells attention. Mitchell has hinted at potentially deploying Sing in different positions, particularly in the midfield at 12 or 13, to maximize her ball-carrying abilities and outside break.
This tactical flexibility could prove crucial as England prepares for the Womens Six Nations, especially with regular center Tatyana Heard ruled out with a foot injury. Former England captain Katy Daley-McLean believes Kildunne should be paying attention to Sings challenge.
"Sing is more of your traditional full-back who kicks and defends well," Daley-McLean noted. "Shes seen an opportunity and shes after Ellies shirt. If I was Ellie Kildunne, I would be having a little look at the moment."
For Sing, the opportunity represents a chance to step out from Kildunnes shadow while contributing to Englands continued success. With multiple Six Nations grand slams, three Premiership titles, and a World Cup winners medal already in her collection, shes ready to add regular international starts to her impressive resume.
"Everyone wants to pull on their shirt for their country," Sing stated. "I havent necessarily had many opportunities to start in an England shirt, but as long as Im performing my best in training, its up to Mitch to decide who fits the game plan better."
