England Rugby Star Emma Sing Eyes Starting Role as Six Nations Battle Intensifies
As the Women's Six Nations approaches its Saturday kickoff, England's Emma Sing is positioning herself for a breakthrough moment that could see her claim the starting full-back position from established star Ellie Kildunne.
The 25-year-old Gloucester-Hartpury back brings an impressive résumé to the selection battle, boasting World Cup victory, multiple Six Nations grand slams, and three Premiership Women's Rugby championships. Yet despite her silverware collection, Sing remains remarkably humble about her accomplishments while quietly building a case for more prominent international opportunities.
Sing faces the challenging task of displacing Kildunne, the Harlequins sensation who became the face of England rugby after her electrifying 2025 World Cup performances. Kildunne's profile soared so high that she finished second in BBC Sports Personality of the Year voting, cementing her status as one of English sport's most recognizable figures.
Rather than viewing their competition as adversarial, Sing emphasizes the collaborative nature of their relationship within the England camp. "I do find it really hard sometimes when you look at the media and they are trying to put us against each other," she explains. "As soon as we go into camp we are trying to make each other better. We have different attributes so we are almost incomparable."
Those different attributes form the core of Sing's challenge to Kildunne's dominance. While acknowledging Kildunne's superior pace and agility, Sing highlights her own physical advantages and specialized skills. "I am a lot more physical than her because I think I am 10-plus kilos heavier," she notes. "I am not as fast as her, probably can't step as well as her, but I do have goal-kicking that she doesn't necessarily have."
Sing's goal-kicking ability has proven crucial to her club success, making her the Premiership Women's Rugby leading points-scorer in two recent campaigns. This season alone, she ranks second in league scoring despite missing several games due to a knee injury that has since healed.
The physical strength Sing references stems from her rural Devon upbringing on a family farm, where she developed what teammates call "farm strength." Before pursuing professional rugby, she earned a degree in bio-veterinary science from Hartpury University, with initial plans to become a veterinarian.
Head coach John Mitchell acknowledges the intense competition for the No. 15 jersey while hinting at potential positional flexibility for Sing. "Ellie is going to be competing with Emma," Mitchell stated, before revealing broader tactical considerations. "We would also like to see how Emma Sing goes in the midfield as well over the next few years."
This positional experimentation could prove crucial given Tatyana Heard's tournament absence due to foot injury. Heard's regular presence at inside center creates an opportunity for Sing to demonstrate her versatility beyond the full-back role.
Former England captain Katy Daley-McLean believes Sing poses a genuine threat to Kildunne's starting position. "Sing is more of your traditional full-back. She kicks well. She defends well," Daley-McLean observed. "Ellie has so much X factor, but I think Sing has seen an opportunity here and she's after Ellie's shirt."
Sing's recent form supports this assessment, earning four player-of-the-match awards this season while helping Gloucester-Hartpury to a crucial 22-17 victory over Saracens in March. Her consistent club performances have translated to 13 England caps since her 2022 debut, including three appearances during the victorious 2025 World Cup campaign.
As Saturday's tournament opener approaches, Sing remains focused on earning opportunities through training ground excellence rather than external expectations. Her patient approach reflects the mindset of someone comfortable with gradual progression toward her ultimate goal of becoming England's first-choice full-back.
