Sing Eyes Starting Role as England Full-back Battle Intensifies
Gloucester-Hartpury star Emma Sing challenges Ellie Kildunne for England's No. 15 jersey ahead of the Women's Six Nations championship.

Emma Sing believes her unique skill set and "farm strength" can propel her into England's starting lineup for the Women's Six Nations, as competition intensifies for the coveted full-back position currently held by star player Ellie Kildunne.

The 25-year-old Gloucester-Hartpury back brings an impressive resume to the selection battle, having won the Rugby World Cup, multiple Six Nations grand slams, and three Premiership Women's Rugby titles. Despite these achievements, Sing remains focused on earning more starting opportunities for John Mitchell's England squad.

Kildunne, the Harlequins sensation who finished second in BBC Sports Personality of the Year after her electric 2025 World Cup performances, currently holds the No. 15 jersey. However, Sing argues their contrasting styles make direct comparisons difficult.

"We are almost incomparable in that aspect," Sing explained when discussing the media's attempts to pit them against each other. "If you look at Ellie, she is crazy fast, crazy step, really agile, lots of flair. I am a lot more physical than her because I think I am 10-plus kilos heavier than her."

The contrasting attributes extend beyond physical differences. While Kildunne brings pace and agility to the position, Sing offers goal-kicking expertise and a more traditional full-back approach. This combination of power and precision has made her the top points-scorer in the Premiership Women's Rugby league over the past two campaigns.

Sing's journey to elite rugby began on her family farm in Devon, where she developed what she calls her "farm strength." Before pursuing rugby professionally, she studied bio-veterinary science at Hartpury University with aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. Her agricultural background has contributed to a physical presence that sets her apart in the professional game.

This season, despite missing several matches due to a knee injury, Sing has maintained her scoring form as the league's second-highest points-scorer behind Zoe Harrison. Her accuracy from the tee and four player-of-the-match awards demonstrate continued excellence at club level.

Head coach John Mitchell acknowledges the competition at full-back while hinting at potential positional flexibility for Sing. "We would also like to see how Emma Sing goes in the midfield as well over the next few years," Mitchell revealed. "She is a very strong carrier on the ball and her outside break, she has a very good fend."

The possibility of Sing transitioning to center has increased following Tatyana Heard's Six Nations withdrawal due to a foot injury. With the regular No. 12 sidelined, Mitchell may experiment with Sing in the midfield alongside new captain Meg Jones.

Former England captain Katy Daley-McLean believes Kildunne faces a genuine challenge from her teammate. "Sing is more of your traditional full-back. She kicks well. She defends well," Daley-McLean observed. "Ellie has so much X factor, but I think Sing has seen an opportunity here and she's after Ellie's shirt."

The competition reflects England's strength in depth as they prepare for the Six Nations campaign. Mitchell has multiple options available, including versatile players Helena Rowland, Mia Venner, and Jess Breach, who can all cover the full-back position.

For Sing, who has earned 13 caps since her 2022 debut, the focus remains on consistent performance rather than external pressure. "As long as I am trying to perform as best as I can in training to be selected then it is Mitch's decision on who is performing better or which style of rugby would suit the game better," she stated.

The full-back battle symbolizes England's evolution under Mitchell, with established stars like Kildunne facing challenges from determined rivals like Sing. Both players bring World Cup-winning experience and proven track records, ensuring England has quality options regardless of selection decisions.

As the Six Nations approaches, Sing's combination of physicality, kicking ability, and versatility positions her well for increased involvement. Whether starting at full-back or contributing from the midfield, her farm-bred strength and professional dedication make her a valuable asset for England's championship ambitions.
