Emilio Gay hits 141 as Durham reach 355-5 against Lancashire

Emilio Gay scored 141 as Durham finished the opening day of their County Championship match against Lancashire on 355-5 at Emirates Old Trafford. The visitors, already Division Two champions, built their innings around two substantial partnerships, according to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport. Lancashire had yet to begin their reply at the close.

Gay's century was his fourth in 10 Championship innings this season, with two of those hundreds coming against Lancashire. He shared stands of 114 with Ben McKinney and 168 with Mayank Agarwal, providing the backbone of Durham's total. McKinney contributed 71 and passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season, while Agarwal made 66.

Durham's start was less assured after captain Alex Lees chose to bat. Tom Bailey had Lees caught behind for three in the third over, but McKinney and Gay restored control before lunch. Their unbeaten partnership stood at 102 at the interval, when Durham were 112-1 and McKinney had reached 64. The pair struck 17 fours during that morning stand.

Bailey struck again in the fourth over after lunch, with wicketkeeper Matty Hurst taking the catch to dismiss McKinney. Agarwal then joined Gay and hit Mitch Stanley for a four and a six from consecutive deliveries. Gay completed his hundred from 156 balls, bringing up the milestone with his 14th four. Agarwal needed 101 deliveries for his fifty, and Durham reached tea on 247-2.

Lancashire recovered some ground during the evening, taking three wickets after another extended period of Durham batting. Gay was caught at second slip off Ben Walkden, before left-arm spinner Noman Ali dismissed Colin Ackermann for six and Agarwal for 66. Ackermann was given out caught behind by umpire Hassan Adnan; Agarwal was caught by Josh Bohannon at cover. Durham were then 306-5.

Ollie Robinson and Kasey Aldridge prevented further losses and helped Durham secure a third batting bonus point before stumps. Bailey returned figures of 2-52 and Noman finished with 2-110. Lancashire's four dropped catches, all involving Durham's leading scorers, compounded a difficult day in the field. The late wickets checked the visitors' progress without undoing the platform established by Gay and his partners.
