Emery Calls Aston Villa-Chelsea Transfer Link Strictly Business
Unai Emery has rejected the idea that Aston Villa and Chelsea share a special relationship despite completing eight permanent or loan transfers between the clubs over the past four years. The Aston Villa manager characterized the connection as business driven by money and player needs, BBC Sport reported.
Watch the highlights:
The latest transaction sent Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Villa to Chelsea on Sunday. It followed Nicolas Jackson's move in the opposite direction the previous week. BBC analysis found that no two Premier League clubs have exchanged more players over the four-year period, although Chelsea have also completed eight deals with Brighton.
Emery said he was pleased for Martinez and Morgan Rogers, who also joined Chelsea from Villa this summer, but not for Chelsea. His point was that each side pursued its own interests when negotiating, rather than granting favors to the other club. Alejandro Garnacho's loan move from Chelsea to Villa completed the summer's group of four deals.
The sequence began after Chelsea's current owners took control in 2022, when Carney Chukwuemeka moved from Villa for £20 million. Ian Maatsen later joined Villa for £37.5 million, Omari Kellyman went to Chelsea for £19 million, and Axel Disasi moved to Villa on a loan carrying a £5 million fee.
BBC Sport calculated that Chelsea have paid Villa £163.5 million for players since 2022, while Villa have committed £102.5 million for Chelsea players, including Disasi's loan fee. Villa's total could rise to £150.5 million if conditions making Garnacho's move permanent are met. Chelsea believe those conditions are readily achievable, according to the report.
The volume of business has prompted questions from executives at other Premier League clubs while both sides navigate domestic and European financial regulations. BBC Sport stressed that there is no suggestion either club has broken any rules. UEFA can examine transfers made between the same clubs within 45 days, but timing alone is not evidence that separate deals were connected.
