Great Britain and Ireland golfer Eliot Baker has described the disbelief that followed his part in a historic Walker Cup victory over the United States. BBC Sport reported that the 23-year-old from Devon helped the home side complete the largest comeback in the competition's history, winning the match 13½-12½.

Baker defeated experienced American Stewart Hagestad on the final hole of their singles contest. His result proved vital as Great Britain and Ireland overturned a three-point deficit entering the final individual session to regain the trophy for the first time since 2015.

The singles win was Baker's only outright victory of the contest, but it arrived at the most important moment. According to the BBC report, he had earlier halved his opening-morning foursomes match before losing 3&2 alongside Stuart Grehan in the second morning's foursomes.

Baker told BBC South West that he remained in shock for roughly 20 minutes, even as the outcome had swung in his team's favour. He said the earlier scoreline had left him feeling that the trophy would still go to the United States, and expected the scale of the achievement to take several days to register fully.

The golfer called the triumph the highlight of his career and described winning the Walker Cup as the pinnacle of amateur golf. This was his second appearance in the biennial team competition, and it is likely to be his final one because he is preparing to leave the amateur ranks. The result also capped his team's dramatic late recovery.

Baker said he hopes to turn professional soon, provided his plans progress as expected over the next month. His stated aim is to move toward the DP World Tour, although he stressed that the next step remains subject to developments and involves a period of waiting.
