Elanga and Wissa Sink Tottenham as Newcastle Earn Jaissle's First League Win

Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in north London as second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa delivered Matthias Jaissle's first Premier League win as head coach. BBC Sport reported that Newcastle stayed level through a difficult first half before scoring with both of their shots on target after the interval at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham created the clearer openings before half-time, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made three important saves. He pushed away Jan Paul van Hecke's header, while Lewis Hall also blocked a goal-bound effort from Pedro Porro. The visitors reached the break without conceding, then returned with a more aggressive approach.

Elanga opened the scoring after a move involving two of Newcastle's summer signings. Nico Gonzalez sent a long diagonal pass over Tottenham left-back Andy Robertson, allowing Amar Dedic to advance and flick the ball into Elanga's path. The winger turned former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali inside the penalty area and finished off the post.

Wissa added the second following a corner. Substitute Sean Steur delivered the set piece, Nick Woltemade headed it down and Wissa improvised with an overhead kick. Elanga and Wissa, who joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest and Brentford respectively last summer, had also shown improvement in the club's opening-weekend game against Liverpool, according to the BBC report.

The result marked a notable change in Newcastle's away form. They won only four of 19 Premier League matches on the road last season and had not kept a clean sheet in any competition since March. Jaissle credited his players' commitment during the first half, when Tottenham applied pressure but could not convert their chances. He also cautioned that the victory was only one step in a long season.

The match was Tonali's first against Newcastle since moving to Tottenham last month in a deal BBC Sport reported could be worth up to £100 million. Newcastle have since added Gonzalez, Dedic and Hornicek for a similar combined sum, with each playing a role in the win. While Hornicek preserved the clean sheet, Gonzalez and Dedic combined in the build-up to the decisive opening goal before Wissa secured the points.
