Elanga and Wissa fire Newcastle to 2-0 win at Tottenham

Newcastle United scored twice in the second half to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Saturday’s Premier League meeting at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring shortly after the hour before Yoane Wissa added the second in the 72nd minute, according to The Guardian’s match report.

Tottenham had the better opportunities before halftime despite Newcastle making the brighter start. Pedro Porro had a close-range attempt blocked in the 17th minute, while Mathys Tel and Jean Paul Van Hecke were denied by Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. Spurs used several recent arrivals, with Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Omar Marmoush among those starting.

The balance shifted after the interval as Newcastle became more compact and assertive. Their breakthrough began deep inside their own half when debutant Nico Gonzalez sent a long diagonal pass toward the right side of Tottenham’s penalty area. Amar Dedic headed the ball into Elanga’s path, and the Sweden international steadied himself before driving a left-footed shot inside the far post.

Elanga’s finish was his second goal in two matches, The Guardian reported. Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi responded with a triple substitution that included Mohammed Kudus, who was returning after eight months out, but the changes did not reverse the momentum.

Newcastle doubled the lead from a corner in the 72nd minute. Lewis Hall delivered to substitute Nick Woltemade at the back of the area, and Woltemade held off Destiny Udogie before heading the ball toward Wissa. The forward improvised an overhead scoop that carried the ball beyond goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

The victory gave Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle an encouraging result from a side that included several newer players. Gonzalez, signed during the week from Manchester City, made his debut, while Hornicek and Dedic also featured. Tottenham, meanwhile, were unable to turn their first-half chances into a lead and were booed by sections of the home support at full time.
