Edozie ends Southampton goal drought to earn draw at West Brom
Samuel Edozie scored after the interval as Southampton recovered to draw 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Tuesday. Isaac Price had put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot, but neither team could find a winning goal. Sky Sports reported that the result extended both clubs' unbeaten runs, with a victory having offered either side a route into the Championship's top two.
Watch the highlights:
West Brom controlled the first half and kept Southampton from attempting a shot before the break, according to Sky Sports. Jimmy-Jay Morgan missed an early opportunity when through against Daniel Peretz, who later saved a long-range effort from Jayson Molumby. The breakthrough came when Jack Stephens fouled Rabby Nzingoula inside the area, allowing Price to put Albion in front.
Southampton's official match report recorded Price's penalty in the 22nd minute and Edozie's equaliser in the 53rd. The winger finished from close range after Kuryu Matsuki headed Ryan Manning's cross back across goal. It was Edozie's first goal for Southampton since February 2024, ending a wait of more than two years for another goal in the club's colours.
Edozie had returned to the starting line-up with Leo Scienza unavailable through injury, Southampton reported. Tonda Eckert also restored Flynn Downes to midfield and handed Divin Mubama his first league start. The visitors' improved second-half display brought a late opening for substitute Lewis Dobbin, but Max O'Leary saved with his legs after Finn Azaz sent the forward through on goal.
Albion also threatened to take all three points. Tammer Bany struck the post after an Ousmane Diakite counter-attack, Sky Sports reported. The chances at both ends left the final stages open, with Southampton unable to turn their recovery into victory and West Brom unable to restore the lead they had held at half-time.
Speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, West Brom manager James Morrison felt his side could have created a larger cushion before the interval. Eckert acknowledged Southampton had given the hosts too much respect early on, but regarded the draw as a fair reflection of the full match.
