Edgar Grospiron Leaves 2030 Winter Olympics Organising Role

Edgar Grospiron has left his post as president of the organising committee for the 2030 French Alps Winter Olympics, bringing an 18-month tenure to an end. BBC Sport reported that the committee confirmed his departure at an executive board meeting on Thursday, in the latest change to the leadership overseeing preparations for the Games.

The committee described the move as an organised transition intended to help the project enter a new operational phase. Grospiron, who won Olympic moguls gold in 1992, gave a more pointed account in a LinkedIn post, saying his decision followed months of tension and that the conditions were not in place for him to continue.

Grospiron had held the presidency since February 2025. His exit follows the February 2026 departure of chief executive Cyril Linette, who cited insurmountable disagreements with Grospiron. BBC Sport also identified chief operating officer Anne Murac and communications director Arthur Richer among the senior officials who had previously resigned.

The organising effort has also faced budget and venue pressure. In February, Grospiron acknowledged that planners had little time and little money, while maintaining that the Games could meet their ambition if the committee had stability. In May, organisers dropped plans for an ice-sports hub in Nice after mayor Eric Ciotti refused permission to convert OGC Nice's Allianz Riviera Stadium into a temporary rink.

Under the revised arrangements reported by the BBC, Lyon is due to stage the ice events apart from speed skating, which is scheduled for Heerenveen in the Netherlands. Governance concerns remained visible in July, when French Olympic Committee president Amelie Oudea-Castera said after a tense board meeting that the project was again confronting leadership problems.

French sports minister Marina Ferrari said there was no concern about the next stage and that work on the French Alps project was continuing. The International Olympic Committee credited Grospiron with helping establish the foundations for the Games and said it would keep working closely with the organising committee. No successor was named in the BBC report.
