Australian Open Champion Jannik Sinner Withdraws from Indian Wells with Wrist Injury
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the upcoming BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, citing a persistent wrist injury that has been bothering him since his Australian Open triumph last month. The Italian tennis sensation made the announcement through his management team, disappointing fans who were eagerly anticipating his participation in the prestigious California tournament.
The 24-year-old Sinner, who captured his second Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park in January, has been dealing with inflammation in his right wrist that developed during the grueling two-week tournament. Despite attempts at conservative treatment, medical scans revealed the need for extended rest to prevent further complications.
"Jannik is extremely disappointed to miss Indian Wells, especially after such a successful start to the season," said his physiotherapist Dr. Marco Cardinale. "We've decided that taking time now will prevent a more serious injury that could sideline him for months."
The withdrawal is a significant blow to the Indian Wells tournament, which loses its top-seeded player and defending champion. Sinner's absence opens up the draw considerably, with players like Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev now becoming the primary favorites for the title.
Sinner's team expects him to return to competition at the Miami Open in late March, giving him approximately six weeks to fully recover. The timeline should not affect his preparation for the European clay court season, including the French Open where he'll be looking to add to his Grand Slam collection.
Tournament director Tommy Haas expressed understanding about the decision. "Player health is always our priority," Haas stated. "We look forward to welcoming Jannik back when he's fully recovered. The depth of talent in men's tennis means we'll still have an incredible tournament."
