Edavalath's Career-Best 63 Gives Worcestershire Lead at Cheltenham
Rehaan Edavalath made a career-best 63 to help Worcestershire take a valuable 55-run first-innings lead over Gloucestershire on day two of their County Championship Division Two match at Cheltenham. BBC Sport and the ECB Reporters Network reported that Worcestershire closed on 205-7 after dismissing the hosts for 150, with captain Brett D'Oliveira unbeaten on 49 when bad light ended play early.
Watch the highlights:
Gloucestershire resumed their first innings on Friday after rain had interrupted the opening day. Ben Allison added two wickets to his overnight tally and finished with career-best figures of 5-19, while Matthew Waite took 3-43 and Beyers Swanepoel claimed 2-42. Tommy Boorman's 60 was the main contribution in a total that left Worcestershire with a chance to establish control.
Edavalath had not been selected in the original XI. The 22-year-old entered the match as an injury replacement for wicketkeeper-batter Gareth Roderick, whose back injury ended his involvement. Making his first County Championship appearance of the season, Edavalath responded with 63 from 134 balls, passing his previous first-class best of 61.
His most important support came from D'Oliveira in a fourth-wicket partnership worth 79. The pair took Worcestershire beyond a difficult middle phase and toward Gloucestershire's total before Edavalath was caught at mid-on. D'Oliveira remained at the crease through a later cluster of wickets and had faced 114 balls by the close.
Gloucestershire's bowlers kept the contest tight despite the deficit. Debutant left-arm spinner Sai Kishore took 3-56, while Will Williams and Ed Middleton collected two wickets each. Worcestershire slipped from 152-3 to 154-5, then lost Matthew Waite and Tom Taylor before Swanepoel's unbeaten 22 helped extend the advantage.
Bad light stopped play with 18 scheduled overs still unused, leaving D'Oliveira and Swanepoel to resume on Saturday. Worcestershire ended the day with three points to Gloucestershire's two, but the match remains open: the visitors have a useful lead, while the hosts need three wickets before beginning their second innings.
