Novak Djokovic Advances to Dubai Semifinals After Straight-Sets Victory
Novak Djokovic showcased his enduring class and determination as he defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday, advancing to his first ATP semifinal of the 2026 season.
The Serbian legend, competing in his first tournament since claiming his 25th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open last month, looked sharp throughout the one-hour and 47-minute encounter at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre. Despite some early rust, Djokovic found his rhythm quickly against the Polish eighth seed.
Djokovic broke Hurkaczs serve early in the first set and never looked back, using his superior court coverage and tactical awareness to control rallies from the baseline. The 38-year-old Serbian converted three of his seven break point opportunities while saving all four break points he faced.
I feel good physically and mentally, Djokovic said after the match. Dubai has always been a special place for me, and I am happy to be back competing at this level. Hubert is a dangerous opponent with a big serve, but I was able to execute my game plan effectively.
Hurkacz, who reached the Dubai final in 2022, struggled to find his best form against Djokovics relentless pressure. The Poles powerful serve, usually his biggest weapon, was neutralized by Djokovics exceptional return game, which has been a hallmark of his illustrious career.
The victory sets up a fascinating semifinal clash for Djokovic against either second seed Daniil Medvedev or rising star Ben Shelton, with both players scheduled to face off later Wednesday evening. The winner of that match will present a stern test for the former world number one.
Djokovic is seeking his sixth Dubai title, having previously triumphed in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2020. A victory this week would mark his 99th ATP Tour title, putting him within touching distance of the historic 100-title milestone that only Jimmy Connors has achieved in the professional era.
With Roland Garros approaching in just three months, Djokovics strong start to the hardcourt season bodes well for his preparation for the clay court swing and another potential Grand Slam campaign.
