Baena and Oyarzabal lead Spain comeback in 3-2 win over England

Spain recovered from a half-time deficit to beat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday, opening their Nations League campaign with a victory. Substitutes Álex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal scored after the break, according to the Spanish football federation's match report.

Lamine Yamal put Spain ahead after winning possession from Marc Guéhi, but England reversed the score before the interval. Anthony Gordon equalised and Harry Kane made it 2-1. Earlier, Ferran Torres had a goal disallowed for offside and missed further opportunities to extend Spain's initial advantage.

Kane then struck the crossbar with a 54th-minute penalty, leaving England's lead at one goal. Luis de la Fuente introduced Baena and Oyarzabal a minute later. Baena equalised in the 60th minute with a shot from outside the penalty area, before Oyarzabal scored the winner in the 74th.

In his post-match press conference, reported separately by the federation, De la Fuente acknowledged lapses late in the first half and again at the start of the second. He described England as a demanding opponent with the talent to threaten at any moment. The coach said Spain had adjusted their approach when their attempts to run into space were not proving effective.

De la Fuente also defended Torres' contribution despite the forward's missed chances, crediting his work against England's defenders with helping create the conditions for Oyarzabal's decisive goal. He emphasised the collective nature of the performance, saying players benefited from one another's efforts. While praising his squad's ambition and willingness to improve, he maintained that there was still considerable room for development as more players raised the team's level.

Spain now return home for another Nations League fixture against Croatia at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán in Seville on September 29. The federation's published schedule then lists a home meeting with Czechia at Oviedo's Carlos Tartiere stadium on October 3, followed by an away match against Croatia at Poljud Stadium in Split on October 6. Those games continue their Group A3 campaign.
