Serena and Venus Williams receive US Open doubles wildcard

Serena and Venus Williams will reunite in the women's doubles at the 2026 US Open after receiving a wildcard from the United States Tennis Association. BBC Sport reported that the New York appearance will be their first together at a Grand Slam since the 2022 US Open, which was Serena's final tournament before stepping away from tennis.

The sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles as a team and have never lost a major doubles final together. Two of those championships came at Flushing Meadows, first in 1999 and again in 2009. Their most recent major doubles trophy was at Wimbledon in 2016.

The 2026 US Open will be only the third Grand Slam at which they have played together since that Wimbledon triumph. They also entered the 2018 French Open and the 2022 US Open. According to the BBC report, their opening women's doubles match in New York will be scheduled for either Thursday, September 3, or Friday, September 4.

Both players have returned to competitive doubles recently. Serena, 44, resumed playing at Queen's in June and later received the final women's singles wildcard for Wimbledon. She lost there in three sets to Australia's Maya Joint and then withdrew from the doubles because of a knee injury, having been due to partner Venus.

Venus, 46, has continued to make occasional singles and doubles appearances on the WTA Tour. The sisters teamed up at the Cincinnati Open in August, where Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns defeated them in three sets. Serena also played the US Open mixed doubles event with Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday; they won their opening match before losing in the quarter-finals.

Venus has separately received a wildcard for the US Open singles draw, which begins Sunday, August 30. She reached the women's doubles quarter-finals in New York last year alongside Canada's Leylah Fernandez, losing to top seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend. The new wildcard now gives the Williams sisters another appearance at the major where they won the second and eighth of their 14 shared Grand Slam doubles titles.
