Eagles lose fourth straight game as Hurts begins injured-reserve absence
Philadelphia's losing run reached four games on Sunday as the Carolina Panthers won 25-14, with the Eagles beginning a spell without quarterback Jalen Hurts. BBC Sport reported that the result left Philadelphia at 2-4 and marked the first time the team had lost four consecutive games since Nick Sirianni became head coach in 2021.
Watch the highlights:
Tanner McKee made his third NFL start in place of Hurts at home against Carolina. Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble scored his first two touchdowns of the season as the visitors added another defeat to Philadelphia's difficult opening stretch. The Eagles had already been dealing with injuries before their loss to Jacksonville at Tottenham the previous Sunday.
Hurts' absence followed the team's disclosure that he had played against the Jaguars with a superficial blood clot in his calf. According to BBC Sport, a subsequent ultrasound showed that the clot had moved. Philadelphia then placed the quarterback on injured reserve, with the report stating that he would miss at least four weeks. No definite return date was given.
The quarterback change comes after two departures from Philadelphia's offensive line. Lane Johnson retired and Cam Jurgens was traded to Baltimore two weeks ago, BBC Sport reported. Those changes, alongside Hurts' absence, form part of a difficult period for a team that has appeared in two of the past four Super Bowls and won the championship in 2025.
Philadelphia's next three weeks bring games against all three of its divisional rivals. The Eagles enter that sequence with only two victories, while their former Super Bowl opponents Kansas City remain unbeaten. The Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 on Sunday, with Kenneth Walker rushing for 128 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas City improved to 5-0.
That victory also brought Patrick Mahomes his 100th regular-season win in his 131st start, matching Tom Brady's record, according to BBC Sport. For Philadelphia, the immediate challenge is more basic: ending the losing streak while its starting quarterback remains unavailable. The defeat by Carolina left the Eagles facing that task with a run of divisional fixtures approaching.
