Djokovic Withdraws from Dubai Championships Due to Injury Concerns
The Serbian legend pulls out of the ATP 500 event to focus on recovery ahead of the Indian Wells Masters.

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from this week's Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, citing ongoing concerns about a wrist injury that has been bothering the 24-time Grand Slam champion since the Australian Open.

The withdrawal comes as a significant blow to tournament organizers, who were counting on Djokovic's star power to headline the ATP 500 event. The Serbian had been seeded second behind Carlos Alcaraz and was considered one of the favorites to claim the title.

"After careful consultation with my medical team, we've decided it's best for me to take additional time to fully recover," Djokovic announced in a statement Tuesday morning. "Dubai has always been one of my favorite tournaments, and I'm disappointed to miss it, but I need to think long-term about my season."

The injury first surfaced during Djokovic's fourth-round match at the Australian Open, where he appeared to struggle with his serve and backhand. Despite managing to reach the semifinals in Melbourne, the discomfort has persisted through his training in Monaco.

Djokovic's withdrawal opens up the draw considerably for other players. Former world No. 3 Daniil Medvedev, who recently returned from his own injury layoff, now becomes the second seed. Rising star Jannik Sinner and veteran Rafael Nadal are also among the contenders expected to benefit from Djokovic's absence.

Tournament director Salah Tahlak expressed understanding for Djokovic's decision while emphasizing the strength of the remaining field. "While we're disappointed Novak can't compete, we still have an incredible lineup of players ready to deliver exciting tennis for our fans."

This marks the third tournament withdrawal for Djokovic this season, raising questions about his fitness as he approaches his 39th birthday. The Serbian legend is targeting a return at the Indian Wells Masters in March, where he'll aim to defend his title and prepare for the clay court season.

Djokovic's team indicated that the withdrawal is purely precautionary, with MRI scans showing no structural damage to the wrist. The decision underscores the veteran's careful approach to managing his body in what he has hinted could be one of his final seasons on tour.
