Durham seal Division One return with 93-run win over Middlesex

Durham secured promotion back to County Championship Division One with a 93-run victory over Middlesex at the Riverside, completing an immediate return to the top flight. According to BBC Sport’s match report from the ECB Reporters’ Network, Callum Parkinson and Brydon Carse each took four wickets as Durham dismissed the visitors for 330 on the final day, despite an unbeaten century from Harry Duke.

Middlesex had been set 424 to win after Durham followed their first-innings 252 with 374, built around Ben McKinney’s 184. The visitors had made 203 in their first innings and began the last morning on 55-2. Durham earned 20 points from the match, while Middlesex collected three, with the result confirming promotion with two Championship games still to play.

The home side struck immediately when Nathan Fernandes edged Kasey Aldridge to third slip from the first ball of the day. Will Rhodes then removed Middlesex captain Max Holden, caught at first slip. Durham also had an opportunity to dismiss Ben Geddes when he edged Carse, but Aldridge could not hold the catch, giving Middlesex a chance to rebuild after the early damage.

Geddes and Ryan Higgins added 64 before Parkinson ended their resistance. Higgins was caught at backward point, while Geddes reached 50 before falling to a running catch by Mayank Agarwal from long-on. Parkinson bowled Zafar Gohar after lunch and Carse trapped Seb Morgan lbw, leaving Durham two wickets away from the result they needed to complete their return to Division One.

Duke and Tom Helm then frustrated the hosts with a ninth-wicket partnership of 79. Parkinson eventually dismissed Helm lbw for 32, but Duke survived another chance when McKinney dropped him on 95. The wicketkeeper, on loan from Yorkshire, reached his maiden first-class hundred from the next ball and finished unbeaten on 100, providing Middlesex’s strongest individual response to the fourth-innings target.

Carse ended the match one ball later by having Naavya Sharma caught behind. Parkinson finished with 4-45 and Carse with 4-116, their combined eight wickets proving decisive despite the lower-order resistance. The win was Durham’s ninth in 12 Division Two matches this season, turning a campaign of consistent results into a confirmed return to the first division.
