Durham reach 493 despite Noman Ali taking six wickets for Lancashire

Durham finished the second day at Old Trafford with Lancashire still 483 runs behind after making 493 in their first innings, despite Noman Ali taking six wickets. Lancashire reached 10 without loss in reply during a weather-shortened Friday in Division Two of the County Championship, according to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport.

Noman returned figures of 6-166, securing his first five-wicket haul for Lancashire in his fifth appearance. His efforts limited Durham's progress but did not stop the visitors building on an innings in which Emilio Gay scored 141. Ollie Robinson and Brydon Carse each contributed 58, with Carse remaining unbeaten when Durham were eventually dismissed.

Play began at 11:15, and Durham added 80 runs while losing three wickets in the shortened morning session. Noman trapped both overnight batters leg-before: Robinson departed after recording his third half-century of the season, while Kasey Aldridge made 24. The first dismissal of the day also brought Lancashire their second bowling bonus point.

Callum Parkinson was the other batter to fall before lunch, also leg-before to Noman, for six. That wicket completed the Pakistan left-arm spinner's five-wicket return. Durham nevertheless reached the interval on 435-8 and collected four batting bonus points, leaving Lancashire with a substantial total to chase even before the visitors' final two wickets had fallen.

After lunch, Noman claimed his sixth wicket when Matty Hurst stumped Shafiqullah Ghafari for six. Carse continued to add runs and brought up his half-century from 114 balls, hitting Tom Bailey for six over midwicket to reach the milestone. Durham's innings ended when Duanne Olivier pulled Mitch Stanley to Rocky Flintoff at midwicket, leaving Carse unbeaten on 58.

Lancashire openers Keaton Jennings and Michael Jones then negotiated nine overs without losing a wicket, with Jennings reaching eight not out. Their reply unfolded either side of tea before worsening conditions stopped play at 16:15 BST. Rain and bad light restricted the day's cricket to 58.3 overs, and no further play was possible, leaving Lancashire's first innings barely under way.
