Duncan Ferguson takes charge at Glentoran with title gap to close
Duncan Ferguson has signed a multi-year contract at Glentoran and outlined plans to improve their attacking play. The club sit 11 points behind Irish Premiership leaders Coleraine.

Duncan Ferguson has been appointed Glentoran manager on a multi-year contract, taking over the Irish Premiership club following Declan Devine's departure in September. BBC Sport reported that the 54-year-old former Scotland striker will be assisted by Gary Bollan, his former Dundee United team-mate, who also worked alongside him at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

At his introductory news conference on Monday, Ferguson set out a target of closing the gap on the league's leading sides. According to BBC Sport NI's reporting, Glentoran are 11 points behind leaders Coleraine. The club have not won the league since 2009, despite investment from owner Ali Pour and a move to full-time professional football.

Ferguson identified the creation of scoring opportunities as an area he wants to improve, while describing the team's defensive work positively. He said he intended to demand sustained effort from his players and combine that with tactical preparation. His stated aim is to produce attacking football, with the players expected to match the commitment he brings to the job.

The appointment report places Glentoran third in the table, with six wins and four defeats from their opening 12 league matches. Ferguson's first match in charge is scheduled to be at home to Ballymena United on Saturday. Devine left by mutual consent after two and a half years, having overseen the club's 2024-25 County Antrim Shield success.

Pour said the club considered candidates from the United Kingdom, Ireland and Scandinavia before making its choice. He and sporting director Paul Millar met Ferguson several times in Liverpool to discuss his approach and the role's demands. Ferguson's coaching background includes two caretaker spells at Everton, work under Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez, and management jobs at Forest Green Rovers and Inverness.

For Ferguson, the move also ends two years away from football. He told the news conference he had been unsure whether he would return to the game or pursue television work. Discussions with Pour persuaded him that Glentoran shared his ambitions, and he expressed confidence that the owner would provide backing as he seeks to restore the club's competitiveness.
