Dunbar wins Vuelta stage 19 as Mas preserves overall lead

Eddie Dunbar won stage 19 of the Vuelta a España after catching Santiago Buitrago in the final 300 metres, while Enric Mas kept his overall lead intact. According to the Guardian's report on Friday's racing, Dunbar finished 14 seconds ahead of the Colombian at Peñas Blancas, with fellow Pinarello Q36.5 rider Thomas Gloag third, 23 seconds behind the winner.

The 210km stage from Vélez-Málaga ended with a contest between riders from the breakaway. Buitrago, riding for Bahrain Victorious and leading the mountains classification, attacked inside the last two kilometres. His acceleration separated him from his three breakaway companions, including Dunbar, who did not immediately respond to the move as the summit finish approached.

Dunbar instead launched his pursuit inside the final kilometre. The Irish rider closed the gap to Buitrago and passed him with roughly 300 metres remaining, completing the reversal before opening a winning margin. Gloag's third place gave Pinarello Q36.5 two riders on the stage podium, with Buitrago separating the teammates in the finishing order.

The victory came after an unpromising start to the day for the 30-year-old. In comments carried by the Guardian, Dunbar said he had told his team over the radio after about 50 or 60 kilometres that he was not feeling good and did not think it was his day. He explained that his condition improved after he joined the breakaway.

Behind the fight for the stage, Movistar's Mas finished alongside the other overall contenders and retained a lead of one minute 37 seconds over four-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic. Roglic's Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team and Richard Carapaz's EF Education-Easypost squad both tried to raise the pace on the 18km finishing climb, but the report said Mas followed without coming under pressure.

Mas remains in pursuit of his first Vuelta title after finishing second on three previous occasions. Friday's result left his advantage unchanged, with one mountain stage still to come before Sunday's finale. Dunbar had secured the day's stage victory, but the overall race remained undecided heading into its final weekend.
