Dream edge Liberty in overtime to move one win from WNBA Finals
Atlanta are one victory away from their first WNBA Finals appearance since 2013 after beating New York 101-98 in overtime on Wednesday. The Dream now lead the semifinal series 2-0, with the Liberty hosting Game 3 on Friday. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Angel Reese and Jordin Canada each finished with 23 points as Atlanta followed its opening-game victory with another win.
Watch the highlights:
Naz Hillmon supplied the decisive basket, scoring a layup with 20.8 seconds remaining in overtime. Reese contributed six points during the extra period and converted two free throws with 4.3 seconds left. Breanna Stewart, who scored 35 points for New York, could not connect on the final attempt.
The Liberty had recovered from an 86-80 deficit late in regulation. Sabrina Ionescu hit a three-pointer and Stewart added a layup before Reese's free throws restored a three-point advantage. Marine Fauthoux then tied the score with 10.3 seconds remaining. Rhyne Howard's unsuccessful final shot meant Atlanta had to secure the result in overtime.
Yahoo Sports reported that Atlanta won without leading scorer Allisha Gray, who was unavailable because of a hand injury sustained in Game 1. Canada contributed eight assists and five rebounds alongside her scoring. Reese collected seven rebounds, including five at the offensive end, helping Atlanta finish with 11 offensive boards. The Dream also converted 21 of their 23 free-throw attempts.
Fauthoux gave New York 20 points, six rebounds and four assists, according to Yahoo Sports. She made eight of her 10 field-goal attempts, including four three-pointers from six attempts. Stewart added 11 rebounds to her scoring total, but neither performance was enough to prevent the Liberty falling two games behind.
New York's final possession also prompted a dispute over whether officials had communicated that a reset timeout remained available. Yahoo Sports reported that Stewart's account differed from the officiating crew chief's explanation in the pool report, and that the Liberty had submitted an official inquiry. No resolution was reported. The series now moves to New York with Atlanta in position to complete a sweep.
