Draft Expert Advocates Defensive Focus for Commanders at Seventh Overall
NFL analyst Thor Nystrom believes Washington should prioritize cornerback Mansoor Delane over other prospects, citing the team's desperate need for boundary coverage.

As the NFL Draft approaches, the Washington Commanders face a critical decision with the seventh overall selection, and draft analyst Thor Nystrom is making a compelling case for the franchise to address their defensive secondary needs rather than chase offensive playmakers.

Appearing on 106.7 The Fan's "BMitch and Finlay" show Wednesday, SKOR North's Nystrom outlined his reasoning for why Washington should target LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane over other highly-regarded prospects in their range.

"Mansoor Delane is absolutely worth the seventh slot in this draft," Nystrom declared. "As you guys know, Washington desperately needs a boundary cornerback as well. I think that is a name we have to add to the short list for Washington at No. 7."

The analyst's enthusiasm for Delane stems from the defender's dominant college performance, particularly his ability to completely neutralize opposing passing attacks. "Last season he erased one side of the field with LSU," Nystrom explained. "You could not throw to the side of the field that Mansoor Delane was on."

When comparing defensive prospects available at Washington's draft position, Nystrom gives Delane the edge over highly-regarded safety Caleb Downs, citing positional value and individual talent assessment.

"For Washington, I would go Delane over Downs at No. 7. He plays the more important position," Nystrom reasoned. "I just like Delane more as a prospect."

The discussion also touched on the possibility of elite running back Jeremiyah Love falling to the Commanders, though Nystrom expressed skepticism about that scenario materializing. He positioned Love as potentially superior to 2025 sixth overall pick Ashton Jeanty, describing the Notre Dame product as "a different player than Ashton Jeanty. But you can definitely put him qualitatively in the same range, and I think a little bit above that."

However, Nystrom views Washington as Love's final realistic landing spot among top-tier destinations. "I tend to view Washington as the last stop in the train for Jeremiyah Love," he stated. "I cannot see that Washington would turn him down. So I do think Love is in play for Washington, but I would definitely put my money on he will not be available at seven."

The analyst acknowledged the challenging nature of this particular draft class compared to recent years. "There's a dearth of blue chippers at the top of the draft," Nystrom observed. "We know where Jeanty went and this draft is not as good."

Beyond the top-tier prospects, Nystrom identified Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate as another player worthy of consideration for Washington's first-round selection, though his preference clearly leans toward addressing defensive needs.

The Commanders' organizational approach under General Manager Adam Peters remains characteristically secretive, with Nystrom noting that Peters won't be "appearing on Washington radio, posting on X (Twitter) with his thoughts on the upcoming draft and the Commanders' needs."

For teams hoping to add immediate impact players in later rounds, Nystrom sees opportunity in the third round, where Washington holds the 71st overall pick. He believes the Commanders could still secure "a very capable receiver" at that stage, potentially allowing them to address defense early while maintaining offensive depth building.

The emphasis on defensive improvement aligns with Washington's recent free agency activity, where they invested heavily in upgrading their defensive unit after struggling significantly in 2025. Adding a premier cornerback like Delane would complement those acquisitions while addressing a position of critical need.

As draft speculation continues building toward the main event, Washington's decision at seventh overall could significantly impact their trajectory for the upcoming season and beyond. Whether they follow Nystrom's defensive recommendation or pivot toward offensive firepower remains one of the draft's most intriguing questions.
