Former Cardiff City captain Don Murray has died aged 80 after a long illness. The defender made more than 500 appearances for the club and played in its 1971 victory over Real Madrid.

Former Cardiff City captain Don Murray has died aged 80 following a long illness, BBC Sport reported. The Scotland-born defender spent 13 years with the Bluebirds, making more than 500 appearances during a career that included some of the club's most significant European matches.

Watch the highlights:

Murray joined Cardiff in 1962 and made his first-team debut against Middlesbrough the following year, when he was 17. His place in the side became exceptionally consistent: he appeared in 146 consecutive league matches from May 1968 to November 1971, a sequence that remains the club record, according to the BBC and Cardiff.

He was part of the team that reached the European Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals in 1968 and played in Cardiff's 1-0 home win against Real Madrid at Ninian Park in 1971. In its own account of his career, Cardiff also credited Murray with helping the club win nine Welsh Cups between 1962 and 1975.

A Scotland Under-23 international, Murray left Cardiff in 1975 and spent a season with Hearts after returning to his native country. He subsequently played for Newport County under Jimmy Scoular, who had previously managed him at Cardiff, and also had a spell at Barry Town, BBC Sport reported. Cardiff's statement offered condolences to his family, friends and former team-mates.

The club had previously backed a family fundraising appeal to support Murray's care after his diagnosis of Lewy body dementia. Its appeal explained that he required assistance around the clock and encouraged supporters to contribute towards his welfare. That earlier statement also recognised his standing among Cardiff's longest-serving players, naming Billy Hardy and Phil Dwyer as the only players to have surpassed his appearance total.

In the club's appeal, Murray's son Scott thanked those who had donated and described how much Cardiff meant to his father. He also recalled the family's visit to Cardiff City Stadium, where they saw Murray's picture displayed on the building. The family's account highlighted a continuing connection with the club decades after his playing career there ended.
