Dodgers and Brewers clinch division series to set up NLCS rematch
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers secured a National League Championship Series rematch on Wednesday, each winning on the road to finish their division series in four games. The Guardian reported that Los Angeles defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-1, while Milwaukee beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 to reach the NLCS for a second consecutive season.
Watch the highlights:
Andy Pages delivered the key hit for the Dodgers, driving in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh inning. Teoscar Hernández had singled against Atlanta starter Tyler Mahle before Didier Fuentes walked pinch-hitter Josue De Paula and Kyle Tucker. Pages then singled against Robert Suárez, bringing home Hernández and pinch-runner Tommy Edman to put Los Angeles ahead 3-1.
Max Muncy added a ninth-inning solo homer against Raisel Iglesias, extending his Dodgers postseason record to 19 home runs. Earlier, Los Angeles starter Tyler Glasnow had allowed one hit but issued five walks in four and two-thirds innings. Alex Vesia ended a fifth-inning threat by getting Matt Olson to ground out. Atlanta drew 18 walks during the series without any of those runners scoring, according to the report.
Milwaukee's clincher featured decisive contributions from Garrett Mitchell with both bat and glove. Mitchell drove in Sal Frelick for the Brewers' first run, then tripled and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth. In the eighth, he caught Manny Machado's 406-foot drive near the right-center-field wall, preventing a potential game-tying hit. Brice Turang followed with a catch of Ty France's foul pop-up to end the inning.
Four Brewers pitchers combined to hold San Diego to three hits, including Fernando Tatis Jr.'s home run, while Milwaukee collected 10 hits. Jackson Chourio drove in Mitchell and became the franchise's career postseason RBI leader at 22. He has 17 RBIs in 16 playoff games, with six coming in this series. The victory also ended Milwaukee's 12-game postseason road losing streak, which dated to 2018.
The Brewers, who won 103 regular-season games, now face the team that swept them in last year's NLCS. Los Angeles went on to claim a second straight World Series championship and is seeking to become the first National League club to win three in succession. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the break before the next round would give Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and the bullpen time to recover.
