Divine Mukasa double drives West Ham past Wolves for first league win

West Ham secured their first league win of the Championship season by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-2 at London Stadium, with Divine Mukasa scoring twice. The Guardian reported that the result also eased pressure on West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo after a difficult start for a team adjusting to relegation.

Wolves controlled much of the opening half-hour, but West Ham changed the match with two goals in a seven-minute spell. Mukasa opened the scoring from 25 yards, his shot striking the underside of the crossbar on its way into the net. The chance followed attacking work that allowed Kyle Walker-Peters to get behind the Wolves defensive line.

Jarrod Bowen then converted a penalty after André tackled Joel Piroe inside the area. Wolves responded before halftime through Marshall Munetsi, who benefited from a deflection off André, advanced into space and cut inside Konstantinos Mavropanos before finishing past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen. That goal left West Ham with a 2-1 advantage at the interval.

Mukasa restored the two-goal margin shortly after the restart. Bowen played the ball forward and Pablo allowed it to run through, leaving Mukasa to face Toti Gomes near the edge of the box. The teenager shifted the ball onto his left foot, and his shot took a deflection off Toti before beating José Sá. Mukasa, on loan from Manchester City, had now scored both his first and second West Ham goals in the same match.

Wolves continued to have possession and Fer López had two opportunities, heading wide before driving into the side netting. West Ham were more clinical. Bowen's shot following a one-two with Taty Castellanos was saved, but Arne Engels delivered the resulting corner. Mavropanos headed against the crossbar and then volleyed the rebound into the net for West Ham's fourth.

Mavropanos was also involved in Wolves' second goal six minutes later, getting the final touch on Jackson Tchatchoua's cross and turning it into his own net. Wolves did not create another chance after making it 4-2. According to The Guardian's match report, West Ham's finishing proved decisive even as Wolves showed technical quality and enjoyed spells of control.
