Dirk van Duijvenbode Upsets Luke Humphries at Hungarian Darts Trophy

Dirk van Duijvenbode knocked top seed Luke Humphries out of the Hungarian Darts Trophy with a 6-3 second-round victory in Budapest. BBC Sport reported that Humphries, the world number two, entered the competition at this stage but was unable to progress against the 34-year-old Dutchman.

Humphries recorded an average of 92.67 during the defeat. Van Duijvenbode, ranked 21st in the world, produced a 140 checkout while leading 4-3 on his way to completing the upset. The result ended the tournament for the 31-year-old Humphries, who won the World Championship in 2024.

Three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen avoided an early exit in another second-round match. The 37-year-old fell 3-1 behind against James Hurrell before recovering to win 6-4. That comeback secured Van Gerwen a place in the next round and a match against Nathan Aspinall.

Aspinall reached that meeting by defeating Ryan Joyce 6-4. BBC Sport also reported comfortable victories for Jonny Clayton and Gary Anderson, while Gian van Veen, Dave Chisnall, Josh Rock and Stephen Bunting were among the other players to advance from the round.

Chris Dobey, Danny Noppert, Ryan Searle and Ross Smith also moved forward in Budapest. The series of results left a broad group of established tour players in the competition even as its top seed departed in his opening match. The BBC report did not provide scores for those victories.

Rob Cross completed the list of confirmed qualifiers by beating Luke Woodhouse. Cross had narrowly defeated Beau Greaves in the first round, which marked Greaves' European Tour debut, before returning to overcome Woodhouse. With Humphries eliminated and Van Gerwen safely through, Van Duijvenbode's 6-3 win stood as the notable result of the second-round action reported from Budapest.
